On Monday night the Boston Bruins took on the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. It was the first time the two teams met since the hit by Randy Jones that has sidelined the Bruins Patrice Bergeron indefinitely.
With what I am sure were emotions flying high, the Bruins took the ice with goaltender Tuukka Rask in net. This was Rask's second NHL start, and with a little help from his teammates, his second NHL win. (CONGRATULATIONS!!!!)
Alas I did not have the pleasure of watching the game as instead I kidnapped Cheri and took her on an early birthday adventure to the Wang Theater in Boston for the Red Sox World Series DVD Premiere. As we walked the red carpet, listened to Curt Schilling, Manny Delcarmen and Terry Francona speaking and then watched the World Series DVD narrated by none other than Boston's own Matt Damon, the Bruins were taking care of business on the ice. The first goal of the night went to Glen Murray with one shortly to follow by Marc Savard. The third goal of the evening belonged to Glen Murray. Glen Metropolit got in on the action as well, scoring the fourth goal of the night. Philadelphia tried to climb back into the game with goals by Mike Knuble and Mike Richards. Determined not to let the Flyers back in the mix, Peter Schaefer scored Boston's fifth goal of the night.
Before any more scoring could go down the Flyers decided it was time for some deja vu. During the last meeting between the two teams, Randy Jones checked Patrice Bergeron into the boards knocking him unconscious. Bergeron suffered a grade three concussion and a broken nose and has yet to return to the line up. In the ever so disgraceful Flyers fashion, last night's victim became Andrew Alberts. As Alberts was on his knees batting at the puck, with his stick Scott Hartnell checked him into the boards and this time it was Albie's turn to lay face first on the ice. As a Bruins fan, seeing players face down on the ice has become way too common of a sight. However, no matter how many times you see it, each time is just as scary as the rest. Alberts was able to get off the ice on his own and was reported to have been able to exit the arena under his own power as well. Hartnell was ejected from the game. The Flyers will be receiving a re-vamped letter from yours truly within the next few days.
During the third period Scottie Upshall scored the Flyers final goal for the night, but leave it up to Boston to finish what they started. In the last several seconds of the game Chuck Kobasew scored an open net goal making the final score 6 - 3 Bruins. It was sweet justice to see the Bruins walk away with a win, yet made me sick to my stomach to see the barbaric and un-sportsmanlike behavior continuing on the part of the Philadelphia Flyers. I think it is about time the commissioner begins handing down some hefty sentences (he too is on the receiving end of a letter from yours truly) such as not only player, but coach suspensions in addition to some serious team fines. Something has to be done to stop behavior such as this! There is a difference between hockey and the checks, hits and fights that come with it and un-sportsmanlike, cheap, dirty and life threatening hits and checks.
