Providence. Providence, Providence, Providence. Things have been happening there. First, we sent Garret down to Trenton, which made me sad. Even though he played only one shift every third Friday when the moon was waxing and Mercury was in retrograde, I loved Garret. I wanted to keep Garret. But Providence disagreed. Instead, we have a new forward, a dude named Marco Caprara from Dayton of the ECHL. He played pretty well last night. Bryan Schmidt made his pro debut last night, which made me happy (he's a nice kid, too). ... And that's about all the positives about the game last night. Well, not entirely. We started off winning- it was 1-0 in our favor before the first period ended (shorthanded! Eric Nickulas from Ben Guite and Mike Schutte)- and by the end of the second, it was 2-0 in our favor (because of Pascal Pelletier from Eric Nickulas and Nate Robinson; the one power play goal we got), but then Bridgeport rallied and scored three unanswered goals (one was on a delayed penalty, which I don't recall ever seeing before and would have been happy to skip seeing last night). Jordan was in net, and he played well. Usually, Providence will have strong first and third periods, almost like defending the other zone during the second period switch is something they loathe to do, something they do because they have to, so they just go through the motions, but last night, it seemed like they had strong first and seconds and a weak third, which Bridgeport took advantage of. We did keep Bridgeport scoreless on the power play, and I loved that.
Lowell lost at Springfield last night (4-0), so despite Providence's loss, they still remain 11 points ahead of Lowell for the fourth playoff spot (Portland has already clinched. Hartford is currently second in the standings; Manchester is third). Manchester won over Peoria in overtime (that news was fed to me via my brother, who got to go to the game in Manchester, even though he doesn't really like the hockey. He also reported that Manchester was sporting St Patrick's Day jerseys).
Tyler Redenbach did not play for Providence last night, and I do not know why yet. Ben Walter and Pascal Pelletier will be at Smokey Bones on Tuesday, signing autographs.
