Girard retires and Thornton gets traded to San Jose.

Dammit.

No words, right now. Maybe later.

- - -

EDIT: So, I walk away from the computer to hang with babies and drown my Jon sorrows in some coffee, and I come back and find out we've traded Thornton to San Jose. I'm still reeling. Y'all, I was coming around to the Joe. He was being captainy this year. Just when I was starting to form the words about Jon and his retirement and whatnot, we go and we drop Joe off, and again, all my words are taken from me. A huge gamut of emotions right now, all coursing through my caffeine erm, bloodstream, and I can't make sense of anything.

I never thought I'd see the day when I was upset about Joe Thornton being escorted out of Boston. Hell, I never thought I'd see the day when Joe Thornton would BE escorted out of Boston. From the way everyone around here loves him, I just kind of figured he'd become an icon of Boston, like the Liberty Bell is to Philly or the Statue of Liberty is to New York.

I was planning on taking more pictures of Ottawa tomorrow at the game, because I love the Ottawa, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't go take some Bruins pictures, because who knows who's next? But... Joe. Not there. Feels wrong.

IS IT BECAUSE I WAS DIGGING ON THE JOE THIS YEAR?!?!? IS THAT IT? IS BOSTON TRYING TO MAKE MY NHL/AHL CONFLICTS EASIER BY RUNNING ME INTO THE OPEN ARMS OF PROVIDENCE?

I'm going to bed. Maybe I'll wake up and find out that I dreamed up today, the worst Wednesday in the history of Wednesdays.

:(. I bet that he will continue playing some sorta league hockey in Quebec Heather. You should keep your eyes open for that, and I'm sure you can see him play hockey again.

'Tis ok! He was great while he was in Boston, and he tried to come back.

Nobody is liking this trade... TSN believes that this is horrible and now Boston is going to be a much more huge target... should be interesting.

Sorry... I'm just dumbfounded by this news and can't stop!
Ok.. I will stop now!

This stinks. :( Love my Sharks, NOT a Thornton fan. They had better do something to make it up to me, like get some defense.

Sharks fan here - Why would the Bruins trade Thornton?

On the plus side for you - you're getting two solid 2-way forwards (are you struggling defensively?) and a good young blueliner.

Marco Sturm - one of my favorite Sharks who comes to play every night, very fast (good for the "new" NHL) and good in both ends of the rink. Also has a knack for timely goals - might be a great fit with Samsonov.

Wayne Primeau - another hard worker who is good in both ends. Really best as a 3rd line C and a PK guy, but will chip in some goals, too.

Brad Stuart - in my opinion, never lived up to his potential, maybe because he was the first in a line of solid Dmen we drafted. Has the tools to be a good offensive Dman, but hasn't put it all together yet. Could evolve to a PP QB-type guy and maybe more. Still very young and growing in the game.

If I'm the Sharks, I make this deal even though two of the players were deemed "untouchable" (Sturm, Stuart) earlier this week. Again, it makes me wonder why the B's would make this deal. Are your lines top-heavy and you need the depth or are your forwards useless as backcheckers? Just curious. Thanks,

Stars fan here,

Only reason I can think of the Bruins trading Joe T. was because of the money issue..3 players for 1 and you an extra million?

Sorry but besides Sturm, never really got a good impression of the other two guys.

Wow!!!! I'm really sorry about your loss. I'm stunned, so I can't imagine how you feel. I know what it feels like to have the captain traded away for nothing, but in our case, the cap was 41 years old and ready to retire anyway.

You're worried about who's next? I can tell you that. Mike Sullivan is next. I heard a dirty rumor that the Bs are looking at Paul Maurice to supplant him. If that comes to fruition, my advice to you would be to abandon the Bruins. He's a lousy coach who can't get it done even on the AHL level. True, he took us to the Cup finals in 2002, but it had nothing to do with Paul Maurice.

Pride...tradition...etc...It's called Bruins? I don't know what it's called but it wasn't looking good before and it's looking worse now.

Paul Maurice sucks so he fits in with Mike O'Connel who sucked as a player and sucks as a GM. Harry S. is a drunk. The owner, who I usually hate, was right: he did everything he could do in getting good players.

Jacobs needs to unload O'Connell and Sinden.

Coach Sullivan .... I wonder if he is tough enough on the players..... We need Pat Burns, more fire, more discipline.

from Bob McKenzie TSN.CA: "But the other thing that really surprised me in talking to a lot of NHL general managers is that they didn't know about the deal. If you've got an asset like Joe Thorton and you're going to move him, you would
almost think that the best-case scenario would be an auction situation. Get as many teams bidding on him as possible. But as near as I can tell, that didn't happen. "

From Pierre McGwire TSN.CA: "I don't know how any Bruins fan could be happy with this trade"

Joe wasn't part of the problem here, he was one of the few that were producing this year. The problem is the management and it's inability to build a decent team around Joe. Lots of people say he isn't a winner, I say he won the World Champs with Canada, and even won the Swiss title with Davos last season. How is that not a winner? The Bruins can't build a championship caliber team, this deal is a step in the wrong directions.

CBS Sportsline ranks the NHL players by position, based on this years stats. Here is where each player in this trade ranks in the NHL at thier respective positions:

Sturm 39th
Stuart 89th
Primeu 103rd

Thornton 7th

I'm afraid this a classic case of a Bruins move, just because they save money. This is the top prority here, not getting better.

It's time for O'connell to face the music, he has run this team into the cellar. What about all the off-season moves? Letting Gonchar, Rolston, O'Donnell, and Knuble walk away, and signing Scatchard, McEachern, Isbister, and Leech? WTF? I'm going to demand O'connells resignation (he is a puppet) only because I know they won't fire Sinden and they can't fire the owner. I want to organize a protest on Dec 11th, where I will burn my 4 tickets to the Dec 11th game (outside the garden) in protest of this trade, and I will demand that O'Connell resigns. Does anybody want to join me? I have to figure out a way to get some media involved so the message gets through, and it would be a stronger message if we got more fans to burn the tickets in front of the cameras...

I disagree that this was primarily about money, though I'm sure MOC is rollin' around in the extra dough he managed to save by getting a three-fer-one deal. The Bruins are sucking right now, and MOC has to unbreak that. He seems to think that trading one of the older players (length of service to Boston; not in age) is the answer. What he does with this is send the message that no one is safe; that he'll blow up the whole house to get rid of the termites if he has to.

Of all the players on the team right now, Joe Thornton was producing and he wasn't part of the problem. Yes, he had his weaknesses - passing instead of shooting, not playing as physically as he could, etc etc, but for once, he was not part of the problem, and this is what baffles me the most about this move.

Letting O'Donnell walk, I think, was one of the best non-moves this team has ever done since I started following them. I do not think that man knows what a puck is or what he is supposed to do with it, and I did not like him on that ice. I felt he was a liability. Letting Nylander, Knuble and Rolston walk was one of their stupidest pre-lockout moves.

Maybe MOC thinks he can repeat the Red Sox's success with this tactic - who traded long time player Nomar Garciaparra and then won the World Series. But he forgot that the Sox really won because the Dropkick Murphys released their song, "Tessie." LOL The Bruins could use some of that luck o' the Irish, that's for sure.

1 G, 2 A, plus Primeau got them on the PP by outworking/outhustling Heatley and they scored on it. And Stuart also logged the 2nd most ice time behind Leetch. So far, so good, maybe? Definitely better than draft picks and a bag of used pucks...

I'm discounting last night. Give it ten games. MOC indicated he wasn't done. Hal Gill's minutes went down to 12 last night. Zamnov looks shaky. Nick Boyton has contributed nothing (except penalties.)

But on the upside McEachern is down at Providence.

Fascinating that many GMs never got called about Joe. It smells like salary dumping. Jacobs saves a million and hopes MOC serves up a .500 team.

Gord Kulzak divulged that the Management admitted were caught by surprise by the rule change implications. Contrast that with Buffalo's Lindy Ruff who cocentrated 100% of his camp on rules changes.

Last night not even analysts on the Bruins payroll like Kluzak and Brickley attempted to put lipstick on this pig of a deal.
